A washing machine pedestal raises the door on a front-loading washing machine to a height that makes the machine easier to use for the elderly and infirm, due to them not having to bend down as far. When storage is limited in the home, a washing machine pedestal with an open front allows you to store laundry, washing powder and other useful items underneath the washing machine, where they are kept safely out of the way until needed.
You Will Need
Step 1
Measure the width and depth of the washing machine, using a tape measure. Decide on the height of pedestal you want for the washing machine. Not all three measurements on a piece of paper. Cut four pieces of 2-by-4 to the desired height, using a circular saw. Cut two pieces of 3/4 inch thick plywood as long as the depth of the washing machine and as wide as the desired height of the pedestal.
Step 2
Screw one of the 2-by-4 pieces to the ends of the plywood sheets using a hammer drill with screwdriver drill bit to countersink three 2 inch long screws per 2-by-4 piece. The 2-by-4 pieces should be flush with the edges of the plywood and run along the desired height edges of the sheets.
Step 3
Cut a sheet of 3/4 inch thick plywood as long as the width of the washing machine and as wide as the desired height of the pedestal. Screw the sheet to two of the 2-by-4 pieces to form a “U” shape, using three countersunk 2 inch long screws per 2-by-4 piece.
Step 4
Cut a sheet of 3/4 inch thick plywood as long as the width of the washing machine and as wide as the depth of the washing machine. Screw the sheet to one end of the 2-by-4 pieces using one countersunk 2 inch long screw per 2-by-4 piece, to form the pedestal. Cut a piece of carpet to the depth and width of the washing machine. Nail the carpet to the top of the pedestal.
